Sample Screen 2 of 13

DISABILITY ETIQUETTE - LANGUAGE

Basics

Don’t talk about ‘the disabled’ as though they are a group apart. Make reference to disabled people or people with disabilities.

Don’t describe a disabled person in terms of their condition eg ‘Jack is an invalid’. Just say what the person has, ‘Jack is a wheelchair user’.

Remember - In the social model we are referring to the person not their condition.

Don’t worry about using common expressions like ‘see you later’, ‘look forward to hearing from you’.

See the handout for words/phrases to avoid and preferred alternatives.
