UNDERSTANDING DISABILITY AND GOOD PRACTICE 'ETIQUETTE'

Generally

Focus on what a person says NOT how they look or sound.

Do not make assumptions about what the person can or cannot do.

Offer assistance to a disabled person if you wish, but wait until your offer is accepted before you help. Then ask how the person wishes you to assist - don’t assume you know the best way. This is a very important tip!

Talk directly to a disabled person not through a facilitator, personal assistant or interpreter who may be with them.

Don’t avoid eye contact.
